RtII or Response to Intervention, is a 3-tiered approach to early identification and support of each child's learning needs. All students are assessed in the general education classroom. They are provided with instruction (interventions) at increasing levels of intensity and duration to accelerate their rate of learning and acquisition of skills. These levels are referred to as "tiers." At each tier, student progress is closely monitored to assure that each child makes adequate gains. RtII is designed for use when making decisions in both general and special education: creating a well-integrated system of instruction and intervention guided by each child's individual performance.
