After completing a full year of student teaching, I graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with my undergraduate in Elementary and Kindergarten Education. The following fall, I began the first of two years teaching 5th grade in Gastonia, North Carolina. During my first year there, I was honored to be nominated for the Linda Rader New Teacher of the Year Award.
In 2008, I began substituting in Berks County until being hired for 5th grade at Reiffton in October 2009.
I recently completed my Masters of Education at Cabrini College.Teaching Philosophy
I believe that learning should be fun.
My classroom is not generally silent, but is normally a-buzz with student discussions about a piece of text or completion of an activity about a piece of text. In science class specifically, there is a LOT of hands-on, inquiry-based learning, where the students identify key concepts through discovery. Math is a positive learning environment where errors and thinking that is outside the box are encouraged to be shared. I love including technology into lessons where possible to give students the opportunity to learn from more than just a textbook or discussion. This will be easier as we now have a class-set of Chromebooks in our room.
My husband and I and our two daughters live in Berks County, and we love to be outdoors. I love music, especially singing and playing the flute and handbells, and I try to include as much music in the classroom as possible. Outdoors my husband and I enjoy camping, biking, kayaking, water sports, skiing, and playing in the snow!
