Hello, I am Tammy Hughes, RN, MSN, CSN. I have been a registered nurse for 31 years. I graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1989 and have a current license as a registered nurse (RN). I completed by BSN and school nurse certification in 2006 and my Masters Degree in Nursing in 2012, all from Alvernia University. My background is in labor and delivery, pediatrics, home health, and long term care. I started in school health in 1995 as a part time RN health assistant at Antietam School District and loved working in a school setting with students. As a CSN, I have worked for Reading School District for 1 year and Daniel Boone School District for 9 years. I have been with Exeter Township School District for 6 years as a certified school nurse at the Reiffton School, also overseeing the ETSD Junior High School. Questions o concerns can be directed to email@example.com.

The school nurse is on duty in the Reiffton School during the school day from 7:45 am - 3:15 pm. The goal of health services is to help students maintain optimal health status for academic success throughout their formal educaiton. During this time the nurse renders acute care such as first aid for minor injuries and illness, advises pupils and parent/guardian in regards to health problems, health screenings including monitoring immunization compliance, promotes health and safety collaborating with the education team, and excludes pupils from school who have symptoms of a communicable disease. Completion of health plans and management of chronic health conditions are monitored regularly. The Pennsylvania Department of Health mandadates health screenings, which vary by grade level. This includes verification that each student has received the required immunization protection, health screenings, and maintaining a healthy school population by watching for signs of communicable diseases.
The nurse does not diagnose and never prescribes medication; however the nurse does administer medication prescribed by physician, including over the counter medication AND wtih written authorization by parent/guardian. A school nurse will guide students and parents toward the community resources available for proper medical attention. Parents should make a point to know the school nurse and consult with her regarding your child's health status.
