    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

    Larry Houp

The members of the Exeter Eagles Alumni Association Committee are dedicated to our mission. This dedication is the force that produced a growth in funds every year since our founding as a 501(c)3 corporation. Our sponsors and donors have grown in numbers and scholarship giving this year and we have been informed to expect increases for next year. Our partnership with the Exeter Community Education Foundation (ECEF) on the Brick Legacy, the Tawni Krol Memorial Wishing Well, and the Eagles Nest Bench Project has been a benefit to both of our organizations. These projects create a tangible gift for the present and also an opportunity to expand the future of our graduates. Two bus trips to the Kimmel Center provided entertainment, socialization, and scholarship funds. We provided 34 scholarships worth a total of $27,500 in 2019 and our goal is to exceed that amount in 2020. This has been an exceptional effort and we can all be proud of the community cooperation that produced the expansion of our scholarship program.

Look for this publication to be on line every fall, winter, and spring. It will serve as an excellent resource for grads living outside of Berks County to keep up with all the Exeter school news.

Tax Tip for Members of Class of 1968 or Earlier

If you are 70 ½ years of age and required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from a traditional IRA, you can now exclude all or part of that amount from your taxable income by requesting a Qualified Charitable Distribution (OCD) be made directly to an eligible non-profit organization. Last year many taxpayers learned that charitable donations claimed as itemized deductions in previous years had little or no impact on their 2018 taxable income due to the increase in IRS standard deduction.

The 2017 Tax Act gives individuals the option of requesting your IRA provider to mail checks directly to non-profits such as your Alumni Association or Exeter Community Education Foundation (ecefoundation@exetersd.org). In doing so you provide:

    • Support for ETSD students and programs.
    • Satisfy all or part of your RMD
    • Pay no income tax on your

For additional information contact your financial advisor, IRA provider, or Amy Lutz at the Foundation web address. You may also check out this QCD website https://www.thebalance.com/qualified-charitable-distributions-3192883.

UPDATE YOUR RECORDS:  In an effort to cut postage we have attempted to e-mail the   Newsletter to as many members as possible.  If you have received the Newsletter via U. S  Postal Service, it is because the e-mail address you provided is no longer current.

    I

We hope each of you will read this section, especially those grads within Berks County, and give it thoughtful consideration. You may have noticed each year the names of individuals who contribute to the administration of the Alumni Association are the same. That simply means the group Don Thomas put together in 2009 are all ten years older....a little slower.....and as much as we want to continue on we're a little tired too.

The Alumni Association now has a strong foothold in the Exeter School family and in the Exeter Community. We have a good idea of what works for our fund-raising projects, and what does not. We stay close to small projects simply because we do not have the man power to do anything bigger, but this system has worked for us. The alumni and the community put themselves behind the organization and the students are benefiting. Through registration fees, memorials, gifts and a few fund-raising projects we have managed to give the students over $125,000. The one negative we are experiencing is....... we need younger people. It doesn't matter where your talents lie, they can be applied to the alumni and community efforts of helping our students.

In taking a hint from an article my son wrote for The Berks County Medical Society, titled "Requiem for the Pancake Socials," we still need to sit down and discuss issues. Public interaction and fellowship have taken a backseat to technology.  We can accomplish a great deal by simple discussion but we need a diverse group to do this. We need workers and retirees, male and female, and the old and young to continue the growth attained the last ten years. We are in the age of instant answers and Amazon computer shopping. Even an order at McDonald's requires a computer. Yet this new age does not take the place of group unity to exchange ideas and have meaningful conversations to reach our goals.

Please consider helping our Association by attending a committee meeting once a month, assisting a committee member by helping with the Newsletter or making bank deposits, updating membership records, answering e-mails, or helping Diane and Charlie who put together all those fun excursions we take. This involves about 2 hours a month for the meeting and dividing the duties among many, instead of having those duties assigned to one or two individuals. Above all, the meetings are informal and we have a lot of fun.

I am in a unique position in that I am the committee member to hand over the scholarship checks to the students and family members. Please believe me when I say how much they appreciate everything that is done to help achieve their educational goals. Volunteering is very satisfying.

We have no idea who might be interested but hope that you will come forward to volunteer. We hope to hear from you soon. Remember, all the difficult work has been done....it's just a matter of keeping it going.

    LEGACY BRICKS

During the 2018-2019 school year the Exeter High School Eagles Alumni Association (EHSEM) formed a partnership with the Exeter Community Education Foundation (ECEF) on an exciting new project to establish memorials and/or honorariums. We are pleased to report this project has been an outstanding success for the Foundation, the Alumni, and the students of Exeter. Since  all proceeds earned by the Foundation are directed to the students via classroom instruction materials and the Alumni profits are directed to scholarships only, the students have benefited by our partnership, and community and alumni support Phase I bricks  have been installed surrounding  the Eagle in the senior high parking circle and memorial benches are ready for use.

Another campus project is the Tawni Krol Memorial Wishing Well. As many of you know, Tawni served as Exeter Athletic Department secretary for over 30 years and a Wishing Well has been erected in her memory overlooking the Don Thomas Football Stadium. As community members pass by the wishing well, many donate and make a wish in memory of Tawni. All contributions are divided equally between the ECEF and the Alumni. Both organizations return the donations to the students of Exeter in the form of alumni scholarships or ECEF classroom instructional items.

As promised, Phase II is ready to roll and you may submit your orders using the following pages. Wishing Well contributions may be sent to Exeter Township School District, Attn: Mrs. Amy Lutz, 200 Elm Street, Reading, PA 19606.

We hope you will support this joint effort toward the beautification of our school and the growth of our scholarship fund.

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Exeter Eagles Alumni Association facilitated 37 scholarships in the amount of $21,000 for the graduates of Exeter Township High School in the year 2018.   This has been a major achievement, and the results should give all people involved a strong feeling of pride in our organization and our community.  The donations for these scholarships have been received through memorial funds in honor of students, teachers, friends of Exeter, multiple business entities, and Reiffton and Stonersville Fire Social Quarters.  We also received a stipend from sponsors whose names appear on our website.  Our committee members have been diligent in securing these funds through conscientious efforts.  The Association has also secured proceeds through fundraising trips to The Dutch Apple Dinner Theater and a trip with Charles Adams to Princeton, NJ where we visited the 42-acre Sculpture Museum, the town of Princeton, and the Princeton Revolutionary War Battlefield.  May Day stretched from a rainy day in May, to a rainy day in July, to an indoor evening in September, where we finally heard the fabulous Grease Band.  A big thank you goes to Chris Nein and Hamid Chaudhry who paid for the band and donated a portion of the proceeds to our group.  We are also involved with the Exeter Community Education Foundation in the Legacy Brick Project, which is showing a lot of promise.

This has been a good year.  I would like to thank all of the people whose time and effort have made it a success.  If you have a fond memory of a student, teacher, or a friend of Exeter, and wish to memorialize them with a scholarship, please contact us. We also are processing requests for scholarships to be given in the name of a business or enterprise. Since we are a 501c3 corporation, all donations can be tax deductible.

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

This has been a year of continued growth for your Exeter High School Eagles Alumni Association. It is gratifying to realize that we awarded $1,200 in scholarships in 2009, and for 2018 we will award more than $20,000. The number of applicants is also rising. It is a privilege and a pleasure to evaluate the candidates every year, and the committee must make difficult decisions with every award. Our 2017 awards had many exceptional students and I am positive this trend will continue.

In May we went on a bus trip with Charlie Adams, Class of `65, to Washington D.C.  We participated in the Exeter Township Memorial Day Parade, which is a pleasure every year. In October, at the request of Dr. Phillips, we joined the Homecoming Parade. The Association sponsored a Ghost Talk with Charles Adams III at the Roselawn Tasting Room after the parade.

The committee is a very solid and dedicated core of highly capable individuals. Our workers are few and the task is great. If you have retired recently or are looking to fill a niche in your life, we would appreciate your time and effort. Please call me at 610-301-2299.

As a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization we can receive tax-deductible donations.  When considering tax implications and planning your estate, please be aware that along with donations of cash or check, we can accept donations of stock.

     COMMITTEE MEMBERS

        SPRING BUS TRIP

On May 13, 2017 the alumni traveled to the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America.  The rainy forecast disappeared and we were greeted with clear skies as we toured the sanctuary, gardens, reproduction of the Holy Land and catacombs.  Our group boarded our bus a second time and traveled to downtown Washington, D. C. where we were free to tour museums and national monuments of our choice.  On our return home we stopped at our favorite Hunt Valley Mall restaurants for dinner and compared stories about our adventures of the day.  We thank Charlie Adams for planning another fun and extremely interesting day for the alumni.  Watch the website for information regarding upcoming trips.

    ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

    IN MEMORIAM

    DONALD W. THOMAS

    February 10, 1933 – January 21, 2017

For more than 50 years there was no alumni organization for Exeter grads. Don Thomas felt that such an organization was necessary to perpetuate school spirit, and today, primarily as a result of his determination, such an organization not only exists but has awarded nearly $60,000 in scholarships to Exeter graduates.

We all know Don Thomas as social studies teacher, coach, athletic director, and administrator, but how many of us know how he arrived in Exeter?   The story, as told by Don to Larry Houp, begins with a full scholarship to play at Wake Forest University.   However, the week before classes started he broke his leg during football practice resulting in the loss of his scholarship.  Years later he was shooting pool in Shamokin when I man walked up to the cue stick rack, grabbed a cue stick, turned around and asked, “Are you Don Thomas?”  Don replied, “Yes, I am” and was immediately struck in the leg by the cue stick.  The man asked, “Is that broken leg healed?” to which Don replied, “Yes, it is.”  He turned out to be the Bloomsburg College football coach which led to Don’s attending and playing football for Bloomsburg.  Four years later Don received a letter from Stephen Ruth, Principal at the Exeter High School, asking whether he would come to Exeter to teach and be the football coach.  In future discussions with Mr. Ruth, Don asked how he came to hear of him and Mr. Ruth said his daughter, who knew Don from Bloomsburg, told him Don would make a fine coach.

No one cared more and worked harder to promote Exeter than did Don Thomas. That dedication will continue as the Thomas family has asked that any contributions in Don’s memory be directed

to the Alumni Association to be used for scholarships. If you care to be a part of this tribute, checks may be sent to the Exeter High School Eagles Alumni Association, c/o Julie Huckleberry, 200 Elm Street, Reading, PA  19606.  Please indicate Don’s name on the check.

Our sympathy is extended to the Thomas Family.

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I begin this message to acknowledge the committee members listed in this newsletter. These individuals have done an outstanding service to your Exeter Eagles Alumni Association, and you should be proud of their service.  We have grown every year, and for 2017, the association is on track to award approximately $20,000 in scholarships to Exeter seniors. Our committee numbers are few and we would greatly appreciate increased participation. We meet the first Thursday of every month and we have enjoyable lively discussions as we focus on fund raising for scholarships. We meet at 7:00 P.M. in the Lausch Administration Building at 200 Elm St., St. Lawrence, Pa. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail me at lwhpjh@aol.com

Recently, I was privileged to attend the initiation ceremony of the Exeter High National Honor Society. Exeter should be extremely proud of these students who participated in this program.  The skill level and comportment of these students reflected the dedication of the administration, faculty and staff of our district. The Association also provides Science Technology and Mechanical scholarships, to cover the entire spectrum of the education experience.  As I visually inspected the facilities, it occurred to me that our students are extremely blessed to attend Exeter High. We will send these students out into the world with a solid foundation. Some of these students will leave Exeter Township and will offer a positive impact on the nation and the world.  Others will return to Exeter Township to offer their talents to our home community. In this way the blessings that have been provided for our students will be widely distributed.

    Lawrence Houp, President

The following was taken from the Reading Eagle 11/13/16: “Lawrence W. Houp, a 1965 graduate of Exeter and 1969 graduate of Muhlenberg College, was a partner in Houp Brothers Farm. He has served as president of the Exeter Eagles Alumni Association and was one of the people over the years most responsible for founding the alumni association.”  The Alumni Association congratulates Larry and thanks him for all his hard work and dedication to the formation of our organization.

    EXETER HIGH SCHOOL EAGLES

    ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

    January 2016

    alumni@exeter.k12.pa.us

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

This year has seen growth in the amount of scholarships facilitated by your Exeter Eagles Alumni Association. It has also been an enjoyable year for our involved members.  The Exeter Township Memorial Day Parade was very well attended by alumni.  Our “Team” had a terrific time of interaction amongst ourselves and with the parade spectators.  The meetings have been changed to 7:00 pm on the first Thursday of every month at the school district administration building (formerly Lausch Elementary School) 200 Elm Street, St. Lawrence.  We have a small but dedicated group of alumni who have expanded our scholarship program every year.  Our meetings are jovial as we work through our monthly agenda.  I wish to extend my appreciation to everyone who attends the meetings and all of the other events throughout the year.

We have received many donations from individuals and members of the Exeter business community which were awarded as scholarships to the Class of 2015 and many that will be processed for 2016. This is a tribute to the dedication of the alumni, residents, and people who do business in Exeter Township to the continued education of our graduates.  If you have a desire to become an active part of your Alumni Association and would enjoy expanding the horizons of Exeter graduates, please give me a call at 610-301-2299 or attend a meeting.  All help is greatly appreciated.

     parade

Here we are, at our favorite alumni activity, ready to move out for the 2015 Memorial Day Parade. As always, Barry Shell was there to provide patriotic music as we moved through the parade route, and Craig Houp donated the use of his truck. We threw candy to the crowd provided by alumni members and chips and pretzels donated by Dieffenbach and Tom Sturgis. This activity is so much fun and we hope you will join in this year’s parade on May 30. We meet behind the senior high at 8:00 am to decorate the truck. Parade begins at 9:00 am. You may walk or ride.

EXCITING NEWS FROM THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT REGARDING SCHOLARSHIPS

The guidance department has recently acquired a new Naviance Software Program which will expedite the application process for seniors wishing to apply for the many scholarship opportunities Exeter offers, including 23 from the Alumni Association. Pictured above is the Guidance Money Tree used to introduce the new program to the parents and students.  Students were able to pick money from the tree (don’t you wish it WAS this easy), receive the directions for the program and pick up application forms along with college financial aid information.  By the time the program is in full use, applications will be on-line and alumni applications will be returned to us electronically.  We were informed the day was a big success and our 2016 applications are in the homes for completion.

We would like to thank Dr. Martin for her great support of the Alumni Association in our efforts to provide scholarship opportunities for our students. During our short life she has been a constant source of assistance and availability. We wish her the best as she shares her retirement with her husband Ken, daughter Kara, son Chris and grandson Ben. On the other side of the coin we welcome Dr. Robert Phillips who comes to us from Pennridge Area School District. Dr. Phillips began his official duties as superintendent on January 4. We welcome Dr. Philips and wish him every success in his new endeavor.

Mr. Kamm and Mr. Seidel would be very proud of the numbers of students involved in the music program, their talents, and devotion.

    HOW CAN I HELP?

You may live out of town or out of state but we could use your help in the following areas and would welcome any assistance you can offer:

FACEBOOK – We need someone to help our FB administrators in contacting and “friending” people. This is one way we can get the word out and increase our membership. Many Exeter grads think they are a member of the Alumni Association when they have actually sent money to a counterfeit company which keeps the money and does not represent the school. We recently discovered over 2,000 Exeter grads joined an organization in Spokane, Washington claiming to be the Alumni Association. This business has kept all membership funds sent to them and the school district did not receive any compensation.  We are the Alumni Association recognized by the school district.  Our $10 fee is once and done and is turned over to Exeter students in the form of scholarships.  Your assistance with our Facebook page can help ensure that our graduates are aware of the situation and use EHSEAA for their contacts.

SPONSORS – Our sponsor fee is $50/year, and in return the business will be advertised in our Newsletter and website. This is an excellent way to support the scholarship fund each year. Please speak with your employer about becoming a sponsor.

Update your records – In an effort to cut postage expenses connected with mailing the Newsletter, we have attempted to e-mail as many members as possible. If you have received the Newsletter via U.S. Postal Service, it is because the e-mail address you provided is no longer current. Please contact us at alumni@exeter.k12.pa.us to update your information. This, of course, would also apply to your home mailing address.

WANTED – Businesses to sponsor our bus trips, which have proven to be a great source of income toward our scholarship awards. If you have a business and would be willing to help sponsor the transportation portion, we would be able to double our profit for the students. Please remember we are a 501(c)3 charitable corporation and all donations are eligible for an IRS tax deduction. Receipts are available upon request.

When planning your charitable contributions for 2016 please remember not only the Alumni Association but the Exeter Community Education Foundation. ECEF provides funds for “big ticket” classroom instructional items and also grant opportunities for teachers wishing to develop new programs for their students. You can learn more about ECEF by visiting the district home page, click on Community, and find ECEF in the drop box.

    January 2015

    alumni@exeter.k12.pa.us

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

In the beginning Don Thomas brought forth a large group of Exeter High School Alumni for a meeting to discuss the formation of an Alumni Association. The first meetings were very well attended. The process of developing an alumni format took its toll on the numbers, but we found it was necessary to form a 501(c) 3 corporation. This was an interesting journey, but one necessary to allow tax deductions for donated funds. Gradually we began to show growth in our membership numbers and our scholarship efforts. In 2009 the Association awarded $1,200. The following year $2,850, then $4,700, followed by $6,900. Every year has seen growth in scholarship awards, as we find new sources within the community eager to add to the education of our greatest future asset…..Exeter High School graduates.

For this year our membership number has exceeded 880 members, funds have been donated by organizations in the area and fortunately we are beginning to receive donations from prominent business entities in the region

A dedicated group has overseen this growth. Our core group is small, and we would be happy to add any friend of Exeter to our committee (faculty members, interested community members, and Exeter business leaders, etc.). Meetings are held every second Thursday of the month beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Exeter Administration Building (former Lausch Elementary), 200 Elm Street in St. Lawrence. Feel free to call me at 610-301-2299 for information.

    MEMBERSHIP

Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge last summer?

If each of our members would find 3 new members, we could increase our treasury by as much as $26,000 to assist our students. Currently awards average $500, which buys a few books. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to award a significant amount of tuition for these students? Let’s give it a try. Membership forms may be found on the school district website homepage. Look for the Community link and the Alumni Association is listed in the drop box.

Membership is open to any individual who graduated from or attended Exeter, as well as faculty members, employees, or friends of the school district interested in the progress of the education of Exeter students. Lifetime dues are $10 and as with all income, become part of the scholarship fund.

PLEASE GIVE SOME THOUGHT TO ASSIST IN OUR MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

HOW ARE THE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS DETERMINED?

Each autumn our committee meets to project our income and scholarship award list for the senior class. Based on profits from the previous year, and contributions from you, we create a list of awards we feel we can provide.

When you send us a contribution in memory or in honor of someone or for a particular purpose, we use that contribution as the base. After the Newsletter is released we add all contributions in honor of an individual or purpose as requested by the contributor. If, for example, we receive $250 for the Stephen Ruth Scholarship, the Alumni will add the amount needed from our fund raising, membership income, and sponsors to reach at least $500. We have always tried to award no less than this amount. The list is then forwarded to the Senior High Guidance Department and they announce and advertise the opportunities to the students.

Scholarship applications are then completed and returned to the committee by the beginning of March, along with an essay written by the applicant. A group comprised of alumni officers, core committee members, and two retired Exeter faculty members review the applications. The essay is most important in the selection process along with the student’s GPA, class rank, attendance, and community service. Most awards are selected by this committee according to the contributor’s criteria with the remainder determined by the senior high school administration.

Certificates are prepared for presentation at the Senior Academic & Athletic Awards Program in May, when all awards are announced.

We hope you can see that we take your contributions very seriously and sincerely try to match your generosity to a deserving student.

In an effort to save as much money as possible for scholarships, the Newsletter is the only piece of information mailed.   If you received the Newsletter via U. S. Postal Service, it is because the e-mail address you provided is no longer current. You will miss updates and trip information without an up to date e-mail address.

    May Day Celebration – May 15 – 16

May 18 beginning at 6:00 P.M. – Senior Academic & Athletic Awards Program – Class of 2015 – SHS Auditorium

    HOW CAN I HELP?

We need help in the following areas and would welcome any assistance you can offer:

    1. Facebook – Our Facebook page is up and running, however, we need someone to help our FB administrators in contacting and “friending” people. This is one way we can get the word out and increase our membership. Many Exeter grads think they are a member of the Alumni Association when they have actually sent money to a counterfeit company which keeps the money and does not represent the school. We are the Alumni Association recognized by the school district. Our $10 fee is once and done and is turned over to Exeter students in the form of scholarships. Your assistance with our Facebook page can help ensure that our graduates are aware of the situation and use EHSEAA for their contacts.

    2. Sponsors – Whether you own a business or not, your place of employment would be a welcome addition to our list of sponsors. Our sponsor fee is $50/year, and in return the business will be advertised in our Newsletter and website. This is an excellent way to support the scholarship fund each year. Please speak with your employer about becoming a sponsor.

    4. WANTED – Businesses to sponsor our bus trips, which have proven to be a great source of income toward our scholarship awards. Most of our smaller projects generate minimal income. If you have a business and would be willing to help sponsor the transportation portion, we would be able to double our profit for the students. Please remember we are a 501(c)3 charitable corporation and all donations are eligible for an IRS tax deduction. Receipts are available upon request.

    5. PLEASE NOTIFY YOUR FRIENDS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO JOIN.

Text Box: PLEASE THINK ABOUT FINDING THREE NEW MEMBERS TO HELP THE ASSOCIATION EXPAND OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

EXETER HIGH SCHOOL EAGLES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

    January 2014

    alumni@exeter.k12.pa.us

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Your Exeter High School Eagles Alumni Association has had a good year. The scholarship awards total for 2014 was an increase over the 2013 awards. We are on the move in the right direction. This movement is a credit to all of the people who have given contributions. Many of our classmates have responded by donating to the proposed scholarship awards that sparked a memory within them of classmates, teachers, or circumstances within their life. Friends of Exeter High School have also made significant contributions towards the awards. Our sponsors who are a mixture of alumni and friends have also been extremely helpful. With the awards we tried to cover as broad a spectrum of educational opportunities available within the constraints of our budget. Last but not least, a huge thank you has to be given to the Executive Committee for their dedication of time and effort that has made this vision of the Exeter High School Eagles Alumni Association a reality.

    Lawrence Houp

     President

The Alumni also enjoyed our Annual Bowling Party on February 23 and a fund raising event at Chick-Fil-A on May 29.

All awards are selected by this committee according to the contributor’s criteria unless they are sensitive in nature, and these scholarships are then determined by the senior high school administration.

Certificates are prepared for presentation at the Senior Academic & Athletic Awards Program in May when all awards are announced.  We then clear the slate and start all over again in the fall.

We hope you can see that we take your contributions very seriously and sincerely try to match your generosity to a deserving student.

THANK YOU TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT

We would like to acknowledge our appreciation to the school district for their support of the Alumni efforts.  When the administration moved from the Perkiomen Avenue building to the former Lausch Elementary School, the Alumni was allocated a small office to work in.  Along with the office space, a small surplus file cabinet, work table, book case to store yearbooks (what a great resource they are), used laptop and a typewriter were shared.   These items are greatly appreciated.

    HOW CAN I HELP?

We need help in the following areas and would welcome any assistance you can offer:

    1.  Facebook – Our Facebook page is up and running however, we need someone to help our FB administrators in contacting and “friending” people. By assisting with our Facebook page we can ensure that our graduates are aware of the situation and use EHSEAA for their contacts.

     2.  Sponsors – Whether you own a business or not, your place of employment would be a welcome addition to our list of sponsors.  Our sponsor fee is $50/year and in return the business will be advertised in our Newsletter and website.  This is an excellent way you can support the scholarship fund each year.  Please speak with your employer about becoming a sponsor.

    4.  WANTED – Businesses to sponsor our bus trips.  Our trips have proven to be a great source of income toward our scholarship awards.  Most of our smaller projects do not generate the income we would enjoy.  If you have a business and would be willing to help sponsor the cost of the bus, we would be able to double our profit for the students.  Chris Nein – Class of 1984, is generously assisting us with the May 3 trip to Baltimore.  We ask that you kindly consider this option.  Please remember we are a 501C3 charitable corporation and all donations are eligible for an IRS tax deduction.  Receipts are available upon request.

    5.  PLEASE NOTIFY YOUR FRIENDS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO JOIN.

     GIFTS/STEPPING STONES

    1.  This holiday season we were contacted by a parent requesting memberships to give as “stocking stuffers.”   This was an excellent idea and we hope you will remember EHSEAA when you are making your gift list.  You are not only providing a membership gift for an Exeter grad but you will be helping to provide scholarship opportunities for another young person.

    2.  Eagle or Patriotic Theme Stepping Stones:  The alumni, in an effort to promote school spirit within the township neighborhoods, will be taking orders for stepping stones to display in your gardens and yards.  We will have pictures on the website shortly.  Unpainted stones are $20 each.  It would be fun to paint the stone as a family project so your stone will be unique.  As always, all profits will be turned over to the scholarship fund.

    Message from the President

Your Exeter Alumni Association is growing.  We have a small but strong and dedicated core of volunteers and some new people have made valuable contributions for the year.  All new help, no matter how great or small, would be appreciated.  Our fund raisers were well attended, and our trip to Gettysburg with Charlie Adams and Bob Fleck was educational, enjoyable, and memorable.  The amounts of total scholarships are increasing yearly.  In our first year we awarded $1,200 to the Class of 2009 and last year we awarded $6,900 to the Class of 2012.  Our proposal for the Class of 2013 is starting at $6,000 and will rise depending on the new donations between now and the final Awards.  The meetings are enjoyable and the camaraderie is great.  We have had a good year….. let’s make the next one an even greater success.

     COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The following officers were elected at the September Annual Meeting:  President – Larry Houp, 1st Vice President – Cynthia (Formiconi) Kohl, 2nd Vice President – Brad Kissam, Treasurer/Historian – Julie (Maurer) Huckleberry, Secretary - Dawn (Quinter) Mohn, Scholarship Chairman – Matthew Goldstan, and Comptroller – Bob Brizek. Fund Raising/Social Events – 9/1/11 to 8/31/12

The Alumni Committee arranged a variety of activities throughout the year
including our bowling night in February.  In May we held our Applebee’s
Flapjack Breakfast, set up our game stand at May Day and participated in
the annual Exeter Township Memorial Day Parade.  Presentation of
scholarship awards was also held at the senior high school in late May.

On September 22, 2012 fifty-seven graduates, family, and friends ranging
from the Class of 1956 to a future graduate in the Class of 2016, traveled
to Gettysburg.  Charlie Adams (Class of 1965) enlightened our group with
stories of haunted locations in the small town and Bob Fleck
(retired Exeter teacher) shared details of the epic battle of Gettysburg
(dressed as a Confederate soldier in the morning and a Union soldier
in the afternoon).   Lunch was served at the Gettysburg Hotel where we
were able to share stories of Exeter and reminisce.

October found us once again at Applebee’s for another AYCE breakfast.
We also participated in Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends shopping day,
where for $5 you could receive 25% off all purchases that day with the
$5 returning to our scholarship fund.  We also hosted a hospitality table
with cookies and cider at the Homecoming Football Game in October.

Thanks to all who attended and supported these events.

We are searching for alumni to volunteer as class representatives to serve on the Executive Committee.  We hope you will be willing to serve.  Locating the alumni remains our greatest challenge.  We currently have over 800  members in 37 states but we have a long way to go to locate everyone.  Please help in our search.  If interested, please contact Dawn (Quinter) Mohn at dcmohn@gmail.com
