Parent information concerning Reiffton/JHS Gifted Program Changes
May 23, 2019
This letter is to provide you an update on the gifted program planning for the 2019-20 school year at Reiffton School and the Junior High School. Mrs. Marian Cain, the current teacher of the gifted at the Reiffton School has notified the District of her retirement. We appreciate all the wonderful years of service Mrs. Cain has provided to the District, and we wish her well.
With Reiffton’s position now vacant, the District administration reviewed our current gifted programming along with the Pennsylvania Gifted Regulations in Chapter 16. As a result of that review, we considered the caseloads of our current gifted teachers as well as the Chapter 16 requirements and have decided that Mrs. Stephanie Isselmann, the current teacher of the gifted at the Junior High School, will provide gifted programming to Reiffton and Junior High School students next school year.
This restructuring process has provided understanding and guidance as to how we can best serve our identified gifted students and remain in compliance with Chapter 16 regulations. All three gifted teachers provided great insight into how they re-designed their programs during the last two years as staffing and schedules have changed. We have taken into account input from parents, teachers, and students as well.
Our planning process included reviewing our K-4 gifted supports provided by Mrs. Kathy Walker as well as the current programming at Reiffton and the Junior High School.
We strive to provide gifted education programming that includes significantly higher levels of challenge with advanced reading and math curriculum, student-interest projects based on cross-curricular topics, as well as cultivate opportunities for competitions in robotics, mathematics, and language.
From a scheduling standpoint, Mrs. Isselmann will work with students at Reiffton three days per week and with students at the Junior High School two days per week. Additionally, we will be scheduling a parent information night in September to provide you the details of the programming offered at both schools. Also, in response to parent requests, we are planning a parent meeting on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 7:00 PM. This meeting will be held at the Reiffton School. Both meetings will also afford all stakeholders the opportunity to ask additional questions they might have. However, in the interim, should you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 610-898-9575.
