Welcome to the Lorane Elementary School
Health Services Webpage
The school nurse is on duty at Lorane Elementary during the school day from 8:20 am until 3:50 pm. During this time, she has a variety of responsibilities, some of which are mandated by The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. These mandates include verification that each student has received the required immunization protection, health screenings according to a schedule provided by the state, and monitoring for signs and symptoms of communicable diseases in order to maintain a healthy school population.
In addition, the school nurse provides first aid and evaluation of illnesses that occur during the school day. She also creates health plans and manages chronic student health conditions, and less frequently, acute health conditions or injuries needing short term management. The nurse administers medications that students need to receive during school hours. The nurse also provides health education and serves as the health counselor for students and staff within the building.
The nurse does not diagnose and never prescribes treatment, but does guide parents/guardians toward community resources available for proper medical attention. Parents/guardians should make a point to know the school nurse and consult with her regarding their student's health needs during the school year.

Any student with a chronic medical condition requiring management, to include administration of scheduled or as needed medication while in school, will require a medical action plan to be in place. Medical action plans may come directly from your child's doctor, or with certain medical conditions, can be supplied by the district and completed by your provider. Further, an order from your child's doctor must be provided to your school nurse for any medication needing to be administered at school. Each medication will require a separate order from your provider. Medication orders supplied by the school physician, and therefore, will not require an order from your child's doctor include acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Benadryl and antacids.
